It is always best and safest to “start small”, when it comes to breathing exercises / breathwork. Sometimes you can release emotions, and/or have physical responses, so always start small. And STOP if it is making you feel ill or too upset. Please note, grief/sadness can occur, because many of us hold our breath (almost in a perpetual type/state of being), to keep uncomfortable emotions away from our awareness. However, our body still suffers the brunt.
If it is safe for you to do so…..we will begin.
Sit upright in a chair, feet on ground, calmly, with no disturbances.
- Shake out your arms for a few seconds.
- Put one hand gently on each knee.
- Take one big breathe – IN (nostrils) and OUT (mouth).
- Relax your jaw.
- Very slowly, and deeply,….Breathe in through your nostrils for 3. Then, Breath out through your mouth for 3.
- Do this sequence TEN times. (Mindfully use each finger, resting on your knees, to keep track until TEN.)
- After final exhale……with eyes closed, whisper quietly out loud, or internally – “I AM SAFE, I AM CALM, I AM RELAXED…” (as many times as you need to.)
- Gently open your eyes.
- You may be slightly dizzy, if you are not used to breathing exercises. Please take your time & get your bearings.
- Slowly stand up, gently shake out your body/roll your shoulders for a few seconds; and when ready, start back to your day/tasks.
- Rinse and Repeat, several times during the day, especially when your stomach/digestion areas start to feel anxious and tight.
- Please do not think you do not have the “time” to do this. That is actually your stressed out brain talking to you. It’s not really the truth. The truth is – it doesn’t take too long to do this exercise.
